Frequently Asked Question

The speller does not offer suggestions to misspelled words
Last Updated 6 years ago

There is a possibility the installation process was not able to configure Spellex properly. In most cases, a Microsoft Office application was open during setup. This would result in some files being locked and unable to be updated by the installer. We recommend rebooting (restart) the machine to make sure all files are installed and configured properly.

Please follow the steps below to troubleshoot the issue further.

Verify the Proofing Tools settings
1. Click File (in Office 2007 click the Office button).
2. Select Options, then Proofing.
3. Make sure the Suggest from main dictionary only option is NOT selected.

Check the registry for the Override key
1. From the start menu type regedit and press Enter.
2. Navigate to the registry key below
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\Override
3. If the key is present, delete it. This registry key tells MS Office to override new proofing tools plug-ins and use what was previously installed.

Verify the registry settings
1. From the start menu type regedit and press Enter.
2. Navigate to the registry key below
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Shared Tools\Proofing Tools\1.0\SpecialtyLexicons\EN-US\Spellex
3. Verify that the value of the Path1 string is valid.
4. If the registry key is present, the setup process was not able to configure Spellex for this user login. Please make sure you run setup using an account that has administrator rights.
